“PURPOSE: Stem Cell Compound Library To characterize age-related changes in the transmission of light through noncataractous human lenses.

SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Glostrup Hospital, Glostrup, Denmark.

METHODS: The spectral transmission of white light was measured along the visual axis in the most central part of the lens in vitro in intact human donor lenses over a wide range of ages.

RESULTS:

The study evaluated 28 intact human donor lenses of 15 donors aged 18 to 76 years. Increasing age was associated with gradually decreasing transmission at all visible wavelengths, most prominently at shorter wavelengths. Empirical formulas describing the age-related loss of transmission were created for each spectral color. At 480 nm, the absorption peak for melanopsin, transmission decreased by 72% from the age of 10 years to the age of 80 years.

CONCLUSION: The age-related decrease in spectral transmission through the human lens could be modeled by a simple algorithm that may be useful in the design of intraocular lenses that mimic the characteristics of the human lens and in studies

of color vision, psychophysics, and melanopsin activation.”
“In this study, the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) composites have been prepared CX-6258 by solution casting in two different solvents: dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) results showed that the crystal phases of PVDF are quite different in the two solvents. When DMSO is used as the solvent, the PVDF crystalline phases could be greatly alternated from alpha-form to beta-form by the incorporation of MWNTs. While the crystalline structure of PVDF hardly change in the case of DMAc. The DSC and polarized optical microphotographs implied that MWNTs not only act as nucleating agents for PVDF but also confine the crystallization of PVDF. Besides, it was found that the storage modulus (E’) of the composites Volasertib ic50 were significantly enhanced with an appropriate content of MWNTs. And when using DMSO as the solvent,

one relaxation process emerges in the loss tan delta (loss factor) curves of the neat PVDF and PVDF/MWNTs composites, while it was not observed in the DMAc system. The obtained results revealed that varing solvents have different effects on the crystallization behavior of PVDF with the addition of MWNTs. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. “The real and imaginary bandstructures of deeply scaled GaN nanowire (NW) field-effect transistors (FETs) are calculated with an eight-band k . p model. Analysis of the transport properties of both GaN NW FETs and NW band-to-band tunneling FETs (TFETs) is presented. Deeply scaled n-type GaN NW FETs operate in the classical capacitance limit (CCL) in stead of operating in the quantum capacitance limit.
